Ah, yes. The unspoken rule of professionalism. For that matter, all things that a successful man exudes: charisma, persuasiveness, intellect, ambitiousness and confidence. Whether we like it or not, our attitude and appearance affects our daily lives and career. We’re told what matters is our ability to do a job and to do it better than anyone else.
This is true but let’s be honest, there are several other factors that set us apart. How many times have you said, “Can you believe what he is wearing?” or “Was that smell coming from him?”. It’s an uncomfortable topic and a delicate issue to address. I’m not saying you need to run out and buy a $2,000 suit. What I’m saying is we are our own brand and we need to put as much work into ourselves as we do into our work.
We all know how important our elevator pitch is. Most of you have it down to a science. Well, before you even open your mouth you have already been judged. The other person has already decided to be standoffish or to welcome you.
You only have 7 seconds to make a first impression when meeting a new client, interviewing, during a networking event or even meeting your company's CEO. This is one of the many reasons why you should focus on your personal brand no matter what industry you’re in. The way you dress everyday for work, your handshake, haircut, the way you speak and other professional traits contribute to your personal brand and success.
It’s a competitive world out there and you need every advantage to set yourself apart. So take an extra minute to comb your hair, make sure your tie compliments your outfit, shine those shoes, stand up straight, watch the cologne and don’t forget to smile.
